Algiers to Canal Street Ferry
resumes operations

NEW ORLEANS --
Today, the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced that the Algiers to Canal Street Ferry has resumed operation in the wake of damages suffered from Hurricane Isaac. Damages caused by the storm, forced the M/V Armiger ferry out of service. Repairs were expedited to ensure services resumed quickly.

"DOTD was committed to ensuring ferry service resumed as quickly as possible following the damage caused by Hurricane Isaac," said David Tippett, director of tolling services. "From constructing a temporary ramp to fast-tracking parts shipments, our focus was to get this service up and running for the citizens that depend upon these services every day."

Yesterday, DOTD crews completed the construction of a temporary ramp at the Algiers Terminal to allow an alternative loading point. Additional repairs to the terminal and landing are ongoing, but service will be maintained throughout recovery efforts.

Additionally, DOTD provides the following updates on Crescent City Connection Division recovery activities as related to Hurricane Isaac.
Power has been restored to the CCCD building and DOTD crews are working to bring the tolling system back online. DOTD projects that tolling on the CCC bridge will resume by the weekend. The public will be notified once a schedule is firm.

With the toll operations suspended, additional traffic mitigation is needed to help traffic flow. To assist in this effort, DOTD deployed an additional Motorist Assistant Patrol (MAP) truck and a wrecker truck to move traffic as efficiently as possible. Additionally, DOTD has tasked its consultant, who is studying traffic reconfigurations once toll services cease in January, to observe the toll plaza area. This will allow them to add the real-time data into their traffic modeling to help develop potential strategies so traffic will flow as efficiently as possible across the bridge in the future.

As of this morning, the HOV lanes are now fully operational including the traffic lights at the base of the HOV lanes on Gen. DeGaulle Boulevard. DOTD crews reset the lights this morning to ensure traffic flowed smoothly.

Numerous lighting issues existed related to wind damage from the storm. Decorative lighting has been restored to both bridges and the toll plaza lighting is now operational. DOTD is currently working to get additional repairs underway.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is committed to delivering transportation and public works systems that enhance the quality of life. In addition to more than 16,600 miles of roadway, including over 890 miles of interstate, DOTD supports the development of the state's aviation, marine and rail infrastructures. Through this work, we are able to facilitate economic development, create job opportunities, improve vital evacuation routes, and make critical freight corridors safer and more efficient.
