GOHSEP SPECIAL WEATHER REPORT
23 February 2015
As of: 4:45 pm

STATE EOC ACTIVATION LEVEL: CAT
WebEOC Incident: 15-006 Severe/Winter Weather Statewide, February 20-23, 2015

SITUATION:   A strong cold front from the north with widely scattered showers began moving through the area last night and will continue through Tuesday afternoon. Considering the temperature trends and precipitation coverage, residents are urged to continue monitoring the latest statements and forecasts for additional information on this hazardous winter weather event.

FORECAST for LOUISIANA

Southeast Louisiana:  A freezing Rain Advisory is in effect for areas north and west of Baton Rouge for tonight. Light freezing rain is expected to develop in the late evening and continue through the night. Ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch will be possible on exposed surfaces such as trees, power lines, and bridges. Travel could become hazardous as bridges and overpasses become ice covered.

Southwest / Central Louisiana:   The chance of freezing rain and sleet will be the main weather threat today and tonight as temperatures continue to fall through the day and overnight hours. A Freezing Rain Advisory is in effect from 6:00 pm until noon Tuesday. The freezing line will continue southward and reach the Interstate 10 corridor by midnight through late tomorrow morning with total ice accumulations to range from 0.01 inch along the Interstate 10 corridor from Beaumont to Lake Charles, to around 0.15 inch in central Louisiana. Elevated roadways and bridges are most likely to freeze during this event, however problems with the grounded roadways are not as likely.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by 9:00 am Tuesday morning and icy conditions should be improved region-wide by noon. Another upper level disturbance is expected to bring a good chance of rain Wednesday but with temperatures above freezing no icing or winter precipitation is expected. Another surge of cold air will bring temperatures back down for Thursday through Saturday but no precipitation is expected.

North Louisiana:   A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 9:00 pm this evening. A mixture of freezing rain and sleet with some snow possible is moving east along the Interstate 20 corridor and is expected to continue through midnight. Freezing rain and sleet accumulations are expected to be around on half an inch. These accumulations may cause travel difficulties mainly on elevated bridges overpasses however some secondary roadways may become icy. The precipitation should be moving out of the region later this evening.

Another round of light rain will be possible late Tuesday night before transitioning over to moderate rain during the day Wednesday. Some of the precipitation could begin as light freezing rain Tuesday night before transitioning over to moderate rain during the day Wednesday.
