Sunday, September 2, 2012

The West Pearl River is expected to crest at Pearl River at 19.5 feet.  Minor flood stage at that point in the river is 14 feet, moderate flood stage is 17 feet and major flood stage is reached at 18 feet and above.  The record high is 21 feet according to the Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service, part of the National Weather Service.

St. Tammany Parish learned a few years ago that the Pearl River drainage basin was altered by Hurricane Katrina.  This makes predicting the exact reach of the West Pearl more difficult than in previous years.

Given that uncertainty, Parish Government and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office have chosen to set up a joint Mobile Command Post along Military Road, east of Slidell.  This is a being done as a precautionary measure.

With the crest at the Town of Pearl River not arriving until Monday night, the Parish President will review tomorrow morning's river heights before taking other actions.  No flooding is predicted in the Town of Pearl River at this time.

Please remain vigilant.

An informal summary of today's events through 4PM has been posted on St. Tammany Parish's Official Facebook page.
