Hazard Mitigation Funding Approved for Several Louisiana Parishes
BATON ROUGE (July 25, 2025) –Several Louisiana parishes are in line to receive funding to make communities more resilient. Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding has been allocated for Louisiana parishes impacted by Hurricane Francine. Governor Jeff Landry and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) are pleased to announce that $17 million dollars in HMGP funding will be made available to nine parishes.
Federal HMGP funding is used to implement projects that save lives and reduce property loss. Working with our local partners, the goal is to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to life and property by lessening the impacts of future disasters. Hazard mitigation is the only phase of emergency management specifically dedicated to breaking the cycle of damage, reconstruction and repeated damage.
“We appreciate the Trump administration working with our state to make this funding available to help protect the citizens of Louisiana,” said GOHSEP Director Brigadier General Jason Mahfouz.“Examples of typical mitigation activities include elevation or acquisition of flood-prone structures, localized drainage improvements, safe room construction and wind retrofit of structures. GOHSEP will work with each parish to provide technical assistance, assisting them with navigating the HMGP process. Mitigation efforts are critically important in Louisiana, not only because of hurricanes, but because of various severe weather threats that can happen any time of year.”
The funding in this round includes a 7-percent contingency reserve that will help cover any potential cost increases as projects are developed and constructed.
