Winter Storm Watch Thursday and Friday

A WINTER STORM WATCH is in effect for portions of northern Louisiana from Thursday into Friday.  The WATCH will likely be upgraded to a WARNING sometime Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the low to mid 20°s for Thursday morning across all of the state’s northern half.  Lows will be in the low to mid 30°s for the same areas on Friday morning.

While precipitation is certain for the entire region between Thursday morning and midday Friday, the timing and potential amounts of the various winter precipitation types and their respective accumulations are still unclear. Models continue to bounce up and down with projections with each updated run.

A wintry mix will be possible in the WATCH/WARNING areas, with accumulations of snow and ice potentially reaching 0.1″ to 0.5″ in places along the I-20 corridor. Snow totals may increase to 1″ or more inches near and along sections of the LA/AR state line.

Rains will arrive in northwestern Louisiana on Thursday morning.  While temperatures are expected to rise above 32° by mid/late Thursday morning, surfaces will be slow to warm, and patchy icing will be a concern for the morning commute, especially for elevated roadways in and around the Shreveport area.

Rain & sleet could turn to snow by Thursday afternoon and evening as the precipitation shield extends eastward through the day.

The threat of freezing rain, sleet, and snow flurries could result in additional travel hazards for Thursday evening and Thursday night and extend into Friday morning’s commute.
